Kings’ Kopitar Out Week-to-Week With a Foot Injury

The Los Angeles Kings face another early setback as Anže Kopitar is injured and out week-to-week with a bad foot.

The Los Angeles Kings suffered a tough blow on Thursday as the team announced captain Anže Kopitar will be out week-to-week with a foot injury sustained during a game against the Minnesota Wild. The timing couldn’t be worse — Los Angeles sits 27th in the NHL standings with a 1-3-1 record and now loses its leader both on and off the ice.

In four games so far this season, Kopitar has scored four points.

Adding to the emotional weight of the announcement, Kopitar has already confirmed that this season will be his last in the NHL. The hope was obviously that he would get through the year without any major setbacks. This news is not a great way to start his farewell tour.

The 37-year-old Slovenian center has built a Hall of Fame–worthy résumé over his 18 seasons with the Kings. His accomplishments include two Stanley Cups, two Frank J. Selke Trophies, three Lady Byng Memorial Trophies, a Mark Messier Leadership Award, and five All-Star appearances.

In 1,454 games, Kopitar has recorded 1,278 points and established himself as one of the most respected two-way forwards of his generation.

While veteran Corey Perry’s return to practice offers a small boost for the struggling Kings, the absence of their captain is unfortunate news.
