Dobeš Fever Hits Montreal After Dominant Game 3 Performance

Jakub Dobeš is quickly becoming more than the heartbeat of the Montreal Canadiens, he’s become a bit of an early playoff hero.

The Montreal Canadiens may have found an unlikely (at least according to him) playoff hero in rookie goaltender Jakub Dobeš. His emotion, energy, and standout performance in Game 3 have quickly captured the attention—and admiration—of fans across Montreal.

Following a dominant 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at the Bell Centre on Sunday, Dobeš was serenaded by a roaring crowd of over 20,000 fans chanting his name. In the locker room after the game, the young Czech netminder, however, was quick to downplay the growing hype.

“I’m not a hero, I’m just me,” Dobeš said with a smile postgame. “A goofy goalie that tries to stop pucks. I’ll go home, eat, watch Game of Thrones, and go to bed.”

Despite his modesty, the netminder has to understand that Dobeš fever is catching on. After allowing a goal on the first shot he faced, the rookie has settled in, stopping 26 of the next 27 shots he faced. He’s composed when he needs to be and hyper-emotional at other times. He’s not phased by trash talk, and he’s happy to give it right back.

He’ll want to find the right balance over what will be a lengthy NHL career, but thus far in these playoffs, this mix feels right. Fans are showering him with love for it.

Even more impressive, his numbers are jumping off the page. He’s got a .911 save percentage in his 10 games played. A 2.13 GAA puts him right at the top of goaltenders with that many games and Dobeš has now gone six straight games without allowing a third-period goal, stopping 58 consecutive shots in that span. His poise under pressure is rare for a goaltender with limited NHL experience.

Head coach Martin St. Louis admits that goaltenders rarely seize the spotlight so quickly. “You just appreciate his play and don’t worry about his age or experience,” St. Louis said. “We’re very confident in front of him, and we’re going to keep pushing.”

As the series continues with Game 4 set for Tuesday night in Montreal, one thing is clear: whether he embraces the label or not, Jakub Dobeš is quickly becoming more than the heartbeat of the team, but its early playoff hero.
