Canadian Daily Rumours: Canaadiens, Senators, Jets & Subban

Subban hits a huge milestone, Ottawa moves on from Eller, and the Jets may need a better answer behind Hellebuyck.

In today’s (May 10) Canadian Rumours roundup, I’m looking at three quick hits: first, credit goes to P.K. Subban. He just hit his $10M goal for the Montreal Children’s Hospital after an 11-year push; the Senators are set to let veteran center Lars Eller walk in free agency after a limited, low-minute season; and the Jets need a stronger backup. Eric Comrie’s fine in spots, but when Hellebuyck missed games, the team fell apart, so the Jets should hunt for a steadier option.

Canadiens Rumour: P.K. Subban Hits His $10M Goal for the Kids

While this is not a Canadiens rumour per se, it’s still worth sharing. Give love to P.K. Subban. He just finished his mission and donated $10 million to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the biggest single-athlete donation in Canadian history. He started the fundraiser back in 2015 after spending time with kids at the hospital. This week, he’s officially crossed the finish line, with every dollar going straight to the hospital foundation.

Subban’s more than a charity donor. He’s a Montreal legend who put up 278 points in 434 games over seven seasons with the Habs. He finished his career with 467 points in 834 games. This $10M gift isn’t just a headline. It actually makes a real difference, and it’s great to see him stick with it for 11 years.

P.K. Subban hit the $10M mark in charitable gifts.

Senators Rumour: Ottawa Letting Lars Eller Walk

Looks like Ottawa won’t bring back Lars Eller. He was a handy veteran depth option this past season. However, word is they’ll move on when he hits free agency. The 37-year-old handled the middle-six, shutdown role teams love, but this year he played just 11:27 a night in 68 games and put up five goals and ten assists — not exactly convincing for a return.

Eller’s had a solid career as a reliable two-way center (Montreal, Washington, even a 30-point stretch in Pittsburgh), but his role with the Sens was more fourth-line minutes than anything. At this point, Ottawa’s probably looking to get younger or find a cheaper vet who can eat minutes, so don’t be surprised if Eller’s heading elsewhere.

Jets Rumour: Winnipeg Moving on From Eric Comrie

Winnipeg’s got Hellebuyck locked in long-term, which is great. Still, they really need a legit backup who can step in and keep things steady when the big guy’s out. Eric Comrie’s done okay in patches and knows the system, but he’s never been used as a true starter. When Hellebuyck missed those 11 games, the team looked far less stable in net.

The point is simple. You want someone who can win a few games and keep the puck out of the net without the team falling apart. Whether that’s signing a dependable veteran or trading for a goalie who’s shown he can handle a bigger load, Winnipeg should prioritize a backup who actually gives them peace of mind.
