Islanders Trying to Make “Multiple” Trades For Extra Cap Room

The New York Islanders are reportedly shopping multiple players in order to make the necessary cap room to sign Mathew Barzal.

Whether it’s because they are learning Mathew Barzal is only going to sign a long-term deal or they want to have the cap flexibility that comes with whatever deal the center does eventually sign, it appears the New York Islanders are trying to trade winger Leo Komarov, and a handful of other players to finally get a deal done with their unsigned star restricted free agent.

As per a report by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello is trying to free up some extra cap room in an effort to make signing Mathew Barzal less difficult. Barzal is near the club, he’s skating and ready to hop on the ice, but a deal is not officially done. He’s not a holdout, but he’s unable to play and join the team until the papers are signed.

At this point, restricted free agents have until the RFA signing deadline of February 11 in this unique, shortened campaign, otherwise, they are ineligible to play.

With Komarov underachieving, it makes the most sense try and move him. Unfortunately, it’s going to be difficult finding a taker. He’s got $3 million remaining on his current contract and as an expensive fourth-line player on most teams, that’s hardly a bargain. Even with a sweetener, there may be a limited number of teams willing to take the 33-year-old on. The two teams that might be talking the Islanders are the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings, who would be willing to absorb contracts if the right deal came along.

Who Else Might Be on the Block?

If Komarov is not someone the Islanders can move, Pagnotta says hints that Thomas Hickey’s name is out there as are others. He writes, “One source said the NYI are “shopping multiple players… Don’t think a deal is close, yet.”

The Islanders will need to do something. The longer this drags on without the Barzal deal done, the longer it takes to get him in camp, and the longer it takes to get the others who are waiting for him to sign to camp as well.

Call Yzerman, the DRW have cap space and can use a good high draft pick.
,A 2nd rounder ought to do it.
