“No Other Way Around It”: Insider Says Treliving’s Job in Jeopardy

How safe is Brad Treliving in Toronto? One insider says it’s not a guarantee he’s fired, but the organizatio is going to do a summer review.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving likely has not been told anything definitive about his future, but that doesn’t mean he’s entirely safe. With the Maple Leafs set to miss the playoffs and after selling pieces at the trade deadline, to say this year has not gone the way ownership would have wanted would be an understatement.

Despite the pressure from fans on the organization to make changes, those changes haven’t been decided. At least not yet.

Dreger appeared on the “First Up” podcast, and explained:

“He wouldn’t be told at this point that he’s not getting the job back, that he won’t be back for another year, because if that’s the case, then, you know, if you’re Keith Pelley, you just pull the trigger.”

He then added:

“There’s no point having a guy around that you know you’re going to fire. (…) Obviously, coming off the trade deadline, there has to be a full review of hockey operations at the end of the year. Has to be. There’s no other way around it. And, you know, that doesn’t always end up with the general manager getting gashed, or the coach getting fired.”

So, for now, Treliving is safe. This summer? All bets are off.

Can Treliving Be Trusted to Fix The Issues In Toronto?

Dreger noted that this isn’t all on the GM, but the organization will have to determine how much of the blame he should shoulder. If it’s a lot, the question then becomes whether to trust Treliving to make the necessary moves this summer, or if a different person at the helm would be a better fit. After all, if the franchise and ownership are furious about the way this season went, why would you trust the person who got you in this hole to be the one to dig you out?
