Hughes Says Canadiens Would Like to Hire St. Louis as Long-Term Coach

Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes says he’d like to remove the interim head coach tag from Martin St. Louis.

Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes noted to the media that he’s hoping interim head coach Martin St. Louis will stick around long-term with the team and take the job as the full-time official coach of the team.

Hughes said, “I’d like to see him a part of the Montreal Canadiens organization for the long term and remove the interim tag, if that’s the question you’re asking,” Hughes told TSN during this week’s GM meetings from Florida. Hughes added that he’d expected St. Louis would have an impact but even he is surprised at how quickly he’s put his stamp on this team and how much of an impact he’s had. Hughes said he never bets against St. Louis and those who do generally lose. “He’s a pretty special guy and he’s proven to be a pretty special coach.”

Players like Cole Caufield have been completely rejuvenated under St. Louis, while others have said he’s brought an entirely new mindset to the team and energy that wasn’t there prior. The Canadiens continue to struggle and were the first team officially eliminated from playoff contention this season. They have not had the type of season they’d like, but there’s a firm belief within the organization that he’s their guy.

Pierre LeBrun wrote back on February 21, “You get the sense the only “interim” part of Martin St. Louis’ coaching tenure in Montreal is how he himself feels about the gig after the season. Not the other way around. Hard not to think he won’t be behind the Habs bench next fall.”

Not So Fast, Says NHL Insider

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, keeping St. Louis behind the bench might be easier said than done. During an interview he gave on TSN 690, Dreger noted that St. Louis has three sons and he made a pact with his wife that they would discuss any long-term plans before he made a decision to take a job on a permanent basis. He specifically thanked her when he took the job because she wanted him to see if he would like this, but he’d been coaching a minor league team prior to this job with Montreal, simply because of the commitment and time away from his family if he jumped to the NHL.

Has the situation changed? Would the family make a move? Will they need to? Those are all things St. Louis will have to consider before accepting the gig.
