Four Teams Interested in Blue Jackets’ Nick Foligno [Report]

There are four teams that are seemingly interested in Nick Foligno out of the Blue Jackets organization. But how realistic is a trade?

We’re not totally sold that Nick Foligno will be going anywhere, but there’s a lot of chatter surrounding the Columbus Blue Jackets’ forward as the NHL Trade Deadline approaches. He’s got some control over where he goes and there’s certainly an interest by both parties to keep him in a Blue Jackets jersey, but there is trade interest around the league, according to reports.

Recently, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period provided an update on where things are at with the forward and wrote, “Beyond Savard, Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno is also on the radar of a few clubs.” He added:

He’d like to stay in Columbus – and a short-term deal was discussed at some point this season – but he could chase a Stanley Cup with a top contender and revisit those discussions in July. The Islanders are a team to watch here, I believe, and other clubs will be knocking on the door, including the Maple Leafs and Avalanche, and I wonder if the Montreal Canadiens enter the mix if Brendan Gallagher’s fractured hand forces him to miss the rest of the regular-season.

The Montreal news is interesting if Gallagher is out long-term. The Canadiens would have unexpected cap space fall into their laps, but they’d also need the Blue Jackets to help them out as the salaries don’t quite match. Columbus would either need to take a contract back or retain salary in any deal.

The Islanders have the cap space to make this move and need to replace Anders Lee but the Maple Leafs do not, even if Toronto has been a team rumored to be high on Foligno from the very beginning.

Other reports have it that Foligno is the type of player who could leave before the deadline but return to Columbus in the offseason, signing again there as a free agent and closing out his career as part of that team.
