Everyone knows the Boston Bruins would love to add some secondary scoring. One of the names that is out there that would fill that role is a player like Kyle Palmieri of the New Jersey Devils. The Bruins haven’t been specifically linked to Palmieri, but the forward being pulled from the Devils’ lineup suggests something might be brewing on the trade front.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, that something could be talks with the Bruins. Pagnotta reports that Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has accepted his team’s fate and is selling. The team and Palmieri couldn’t come to terms and there are several teams interested, including the Bruins says Pagnotta.
Of course, they aren’t the only team as the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked in speculation but Pagnotta notes that trade talks have picked up since Sunday’s decision to sit the 30-year-old and the Bruins are a team that might be stepping up in the final days.
The Bruins could be that club, as they have interest in both Palmieri and Devils defenceman Dmitry Kulikov, also set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Boston is all in, from what I’ve been hearing. They want a mid-six winger and a blueliner by the deadline and could kill two birds with one stone if they can agree to a deal with the Devils.
The Bruins haven’t gotten what they wanted out of Craig Smith, and the injury to Ondrej Kase has certainly hasn’t helped. Few teams need a right-wing upgrade more than Boston does. Add that David Krejci is a UFA and leaders like Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand are over 30, this may be the year to go for it.
Palmieri has an eight-team no-trade list, so that may play a factor in where he ultimately goes.
It’s Not Just a Rental for the Bruins
Pagnotta adds that there’s more than just acquiring Palmieri as a rental at stake here. He notes, “There’s also been some talk the Bruins or another interested club would want to explore an extension with Palmieri before committing, but that’s not presently the case.”
If the Bruins do land Palmieri and an extension is possible, it could change the return as the B’s would effectively be doing more than landing a rental. That has value and it could up the return for New Jersey. At this point, it’s not clear if that hurts or helps the Bruins odds of making the deal.
