The Philadelphia Flyers have extended forward Scott Laughton to a five-year extension. One of the more popular names heading into the NHL Trade Deadline, there was talk the Flyers were interested in keeping Laughton and the two sides were working on an extension. The deal is worth $3 million per season for a total of $15 million.

Just the other day, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman brought up Laughton’s name during the Saturday Headlines report and noted that a number of teams have shown interest in the forward. He also said Laughton had told the Flyers he wanted to say and sign an extension. The talks then shifted to trying to hammer out a deal before it became necessary to trade him for an asset.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins were linked to Laughton talks and looking to fill their third line center spot. Of course, that’s not happening now that he’s off the market. The term of the deal seems to suggest that the Flyers were worried they’d lose him as a rental and that he might sign an extension with another team if traded.
The 26-year-old was selected by the Flyers in the first round (No. 20) of the 2012 NHL Draft and has scored 123 points (51 goals, 72 assists) in 359 regular-season games and 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Keep in mind, the Flyers will now have to protect Laughton if they don’t want to expose him in expansion draft. As UFA, he would not have been on their protected list.
