Now What?: Gostisbehere Clears Waivers, Flyers Goalie Hunting

Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has cleared waivers. What’s next for the Philadelphia Flyers who are still rumored to be on the hunt?

Shayne Gostisbehere Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers waived Shanye Gostisbehere on Tuesday and while the defenseman cleared waivers on Wednesday, there was some talk a team might be enticed to claim him considering a couple of defenseman have been put on the shelf and Gostisbehere is paid less than his cap hit. Ultimately, that didn’t happen and the Flyers hung onto the blueliner.

But, does that mean whatever rumored moves the Flyers were planning on making are now no longer possible?

There are reports the Flyers are planning to make a future trade and that the decision on the defenseman is just the first of many items on the team’s to-do list. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports it’s his understanding the Flyers have had internal discussions about trading for a goaltender.

The reason is that starter Carter Hart has run into his first real struggles as an NHL netminder and asking Brian Elliott to carry the load may be more than the backup can handle. Another option in net might allow Hart to reset his game, the team can take a bit of a load off his shoulders and see him bounce back when the team needs him most.

While there are a few goaltenders potentially available on the market over the next couple of weeks, LeBrun believes Detroit Red Wings netminder Jonathan Bernier is a player the Flyers might be targeting.

What About Gostisbehere?

As for what’s next for the defenseman, the Flyers didn’t expect he would be claimed in the first place. This wasn’t necessarily a move made to get another team to take him. Head coach Alain Vigneault said, “It just gives us a little bit more flexibility in player personnel.” He added, “I’m not sure about my lineup tomorrow, I’m not sure if he’s gonna be in, but if he’s in, then he’s in. If he’s not, then he’s on the taxi squad, and it permits me to have one more player available on our roster. It’s just a question of a little bit more flexibility.”
