Canucks and Goalie Thatcher Demko Closing in on Long-Term Extension

The Vancouver Canucks are close to inking goaltender Thatcher Demko to a five-year extension worth $25 million.

As per a report by TSN’s Frank Seravalli, the Vancouver Canucks and goaltender Thatcher Demko are closing in on a long-term extension. He posts, the deal is for five years and $25 million. A $5 million cap hit would put Demko tied for 12th-highest cap hit among NHL goalies next season, per @CapFriendly.

There was discussion during the most recent TSN Insider Trading segment that Vancouver was looking to get a deal done with Demko so they could then turn their attention to pending free agents like Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.

Demko, 25, is in his fourth season with the Canucks after being taken in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft out of Boston College. He had an incredible run during last season’s playoffs for the Canucks and filled in nicely for the absent Jacob Markstrom who eventually left the team for the Calgary Flames in free agency this offseason. GM Jim Benning then signed Braden Holtby as a 1B to Demko, but likely knew the future of the Canucks’ netminding was Demko.

In 25 games this season, the San Diego native is 12-12-1 with a goals against average of 2.77 and a .917 save percentage. For his career, Demko is 30-25-4 with a 2.92 GAA and .911 SV% over 62 games.

Is This a Good Deal for Demko?

Some will argue this is a lot of money for a netminder who really only had one excellent month. Others will suggest this could be a huge win for the Canucks if Demko becomes a more consistent starter. If the latter, he could outplay his contract in a major way.

If the former, Benning might get leveled again for signing another contract at too high a price tag.
