There are a few news stories worth covering when it comes to the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. There are updates on the lawsuit involving a Dallas hotel and a bounced check, a status update on newly-acquired free agent forward Dominik Kahun and trade speculation surrounding a depth forward. Finally, which Oiler is favorited to win the Hart Trophy this season — Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl?
Dominik Kahun Headed For Edmonton
The Oilers have announced that free agent signee Dominik Kahun is leaving Germany and headed to the Oilers. They have recalled Kahun from his loan and he’s now en route to join the rest of his new teammates at camp.
Big things are expected of Kahun who might be slotted into a top-six role alongside his friend and former teammate Leon Draisaitl this coming season. If the Oilers can get a quality campaign out of Kahun, that will be a massive win for the team as he signed a one-year $975K deal this offseason.
Draisaitl or McDavid For the Hart Trophy?
Speaking of Draisaitl, the Hart Trophy Winner is not expected to repeat this coming season and successfully defend his award. At least not according to Bet Online, who has Connor McDavid at 4/1 odds to win the Hart Memorial Trophy this season.
Draisaitl won last season but McDavid is the favorite this year. He’s also the favourite to win the Art Ross trophy in 2021 (+275). What McDavid can score in a 56-game season is anyone’s guess but one has to assume a 70-75 point season would do it.
Oilers Settle Lawsuit
Rick Westhead is reporting that the Oilers have settled their lawsuit with a Dallas hotel that had sued for a bounced check. It was an embarrassing clerical error for the Oilers who said they had been struggling like most teams were to navigate the changes and manage the books thanks to a pandemic.
The Oilers claimed it was never not about having the money, just that there were accounting issues that saw the Dallas hotel bill unfortunately go unpaid. They have asked that the case be dismissed now that it has been settled.
Buzz of an Alex Chiasson Trade?
Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer recently spoke with Mark Spector and Drew Remenda on his show about the possibility the Oilers might move a depth forward for a defenseman before the 2020-21 season begins. This isn’t the first time rumors of this sort have come up.
Stauffer specifically noted that the forward in question would be on the last year of his contract and making less than $2.5M. While he didn’t say the name, that is the exact situation for forward Alex Chiasson.
