Ducks Still Stuck On Term With Hampus Lindholm, Trade Seems Likely

Updates on the situation between Hampus Lindholm and the Anaheim Ducks suggest a trade could be coming as the two sides can’t agree on term.

It appears the Anaheim Ducks are getting closer and closer to a trade that would see defenseman Hampus Lindholm wind up on another team this season. As the NHL Trade Deadline approaches and the two sides can’t seem to find common ground on an extension, the scenario that likely plays out is Lindholm gets traded.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff provided an update on Twitter regarding the Lindholm situation and noted, “Doesn’t sound like much progress has been made between #NHLDucks and Hampus Lindholm. As we’ve reported, term has been the sticking point.” He then asks if GM Pat Verbeek might circle back, but has noted the ask around the league for the defenseman is a first-round pick, Grade A top prospect, plus another piece.

It sounds like a huge ask on paper, but the reality of the trade deadline is that teams will overpay for rentals or players that have the cache and a skill set that could help a playoff contender. There are always clubs eager to spend too much to give themselves the best possible shot at a Stanley Cup, and when you look at the return Ben Chiarot fetched, it’s no wonder the Ducks are asking for a big haul.

Lindholm is going to be among the most coveted defensemen still available ahead of Monday’s deadline. It’s not a terrible gamble on the Ducks’ part to see if a team will bite.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period writes that Mark Giordano might be the other big blue line name to watch and Pagnotta suggests there are multiple teams kicking tires on both players. Among them are the Toronto Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes, St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers, and Boston Bruins.

The Hockey News wonders if the Nashville Predators might be a team to watch. They are a sleeper buyer at this year’s deadline that no one seems to be talking all that much about.
