Coyotes to Sign Forward Drake Caggiula

There is news on Monday that Drake Caggiula has signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes for $700K.

There was speculation earlier on Monday that Drake Caggiula was close to signing a one-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes. It appears that news is now official as Elliotte Friedman has tweeted the deal is for one-year and $700K. This will be Caggiula’s third team since 2016, having previously played with the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers.

Caggiula is a strong bottom-six NHL option that was on the verge of being left off of the free agent signings list with so little money available. There was speculation he could wind up being a PTO invite for a team, but instead, he gets a new deal under the wire and about three weeks before the NHL season is set to begin on January 13th.

Caggiula can kill penalties, gives the Coyotes a bit more flexibility and depth and he’s got the ability to out-perform this contract, potentially making him a tradeable asset by the NHL trade deadline, should he not prove to be an asset for hanging onto.

There are some potential injury issues that may have been part of the reason his being signed didn’t happen earlier, but this is a fairly low-risk deal for Arizona, a team that isn’t looking to spend a lot of money.

In 40 games last season, Caggiula recorded nine goals and six assists for a total of 15 points. He also posted 32 penalty minutes.
