Devils Nico Hischier Helped Rescue a Family Stranded on a Swiss River
Nico Hischier’s heroic rescue of a stranded family on the Aare River highlights his bravery and quick response.
An incredible story is surfacing on Thursday as New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier helped rescue a family of four after their inflatable boat became stranded near a dam on the Aare River in Bern, Switzerland, this week.
The family, which included two children, ran into trouble on the water, prompting a police response. Hischier happened to be nearby and joined the effort, helping alongside first responders and several other bystanders. Bern cantonal police said officers ultimately used a throw bag to pull the boat to shore, and all four occupants were rescued unharmed.
A witness described Hischier’s actions as heroic, but true to form, the Devils captain downplayed his role.
Speaking to Swiss outlet “20 Minuten,” Hischier said everyone involved was simply relieved no one was harmed, and that helping in that moment felt like the obvious thing to do. He was also quick to credit the many other people who pitched in alongside police to get the family to safety. “In this situation, everyone is grateful for support, and we were all relieved that no one was harmed in the end,” he said.
It’s a fitting moment for a player widely regarded around the NHL as one of its most humble stars, on and off the ice. Amanda Stein, who covered the story on social media also wrote, “Knowing Nico as I do, I’m sure he’s like, “Oh, great, thanks, Amanda, for bringing more attention to this.”
Other reactions included, “Even more reason to love The Captain. Great player, better person. You make Jersey proud Cap!”.
