DeBrincat Talks About His Future If Kane and Toews Exit Blackhawks

What will Blackhawks’ forward Alex DeBrincat do if Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane depart from the organization?

When asked how he would feel if Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were no longer part of the Chicago Blackhawks organization, more specifically that they would choose to leave the organization versus go through a full rebuild, Alex DeBrincat said, “That’s their decision, that doesn’t really affect me.”

DeBrincat sat in front of reporters and talked about his and the team’s season, including what’s coming next for an organization that will make major changes. There’s been a lot of talk about Kane and Toews potentially both wanting out if conversations with their agent and GM Kyle Davidson don’t go well this offseason. If either or both feel they’d rather leave than tank for a couple of seasons, both could be traded.

DeBrincat has also been rumored as a potential trade piece, but the more likely situation is that he’s a key part of any rebuild unless another team approaches the Blackhawks with an insane trade offer they can’t refuse. DeBrincat said, “I’m still young, I want to help bring this team to the playoffs and win.” He noted, that whatever Kane and Toews decide to do won’t have an impact on what he decides to do. If he’s traded, DeBrincat will help his new team. If he stays, he’ll do what he can to make the young guys comfortable and turn the organization into a winner again.

This Year’s Draft Could Shape Blackhawks Short and Long-Term Future

Scott Powers of The Athletic writes that how the draft goes this offseason for the Blackhawks will be an indicator as to what comes next. If general manager Kyle Davidson gets a top pick and sends their 2023 first-round to Columbus as part of the Seth Jones trade, Davidson might try to make the team better right away. If he doesn’t land in the top two spots, they might tear everything down and rebuild, which would potentially signal an exit for Kane and Toews.

Powers adds that if the Blackhawks take the longer approach to a rebuild, “you can expect him to further weaken his NHL roster.” That might mean also letting Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Strome leave as free agents, “and they wouldn’t likely be replaced by any top-six-caliber forwards.”
