Jets Could End Up Trading Pierre-Luc Dubois This Offseason

Might the Winnipeg Jets feel forced into a decision where they would need to trade Pierre-Luc Dubois this offseason?

The Winnipeg Jets are a team that is expected to make some significant offseason changes, but the one player many expected the franchise might try to hold onto was Pierre-Luc Dubois. That said, the club may not have a choice but to trade the star centerman if negotiations go sideways, as per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

As per Elliotte Friedman, who addressed the rumors surrounding Dubois during a recent 32 Thoughts segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Dubois‘ situation in Winnipeg is one to watch with interest. The pending RFA is up for a new contract he’s got two years of unrestricted free agency left that the Jets can buy in an extension.

Cap Friendly has Dubois finishing up a two-year contract with an annual cap hit of $5 million and an actual salary this season of $6.65 million. It’ll cost the Jets $6 million to qualify his rights but he could seek much more than that on his next contract. He has 27 goals and 58 points in 78 games this season.

The Jets see him as a player they’d like to partially shape their retool around, but Friedman notes that Dubois has some leverage in negotiations and if he’s not keen on signing a long-term extension, the Jets may change their tune. Friedman isn’t sure that Dubois will want to commit long-term and the Jets see this as the only realistic option, especially because they traded Patrik Laine to acquire him in 2021.

Could the Jets give the player an ultimatum? Either sign or we’ll try to trade you? It seems rash, but if the Jets are throwing things into a blender this summer, why not really shake up the roster?

Jets Need to Know the Plan

If Dubois isn’t into being part of whatever the Jets plan to do next, it’s best they know right away. If the organization needs to shop him, reaching out to teams like the LA Kings, New York Rangers, and Montreal Canadiens is wise to do almost immediately.

And, if names like Mark Scheifele, Connor Hellebuyck and Blake Wheeler are going to follow, perhaps the Jets want to pull the Band-aid off this retooling quickly and do as much in one summer as possible.
