Blue Jackets Forced to Find Replacement For Injured Gustav Nyquist
Gustav Nyuquist will miss the next five to siz months with a shoulder injury. What will the Blue Jackets do next?
The Columbus Blue Jackets announced some terrible news on Wednesday as they revealed the team’s second-leading scorer behind Pierre-Luc Dubois will be out for at least five to six months. Gustav Nyquist is dealing with shoulder surgery and will miss a good portion of next season.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekäläinen said of the injury news that he’ll be sad to see the team lose his high production, “But a cyst developed over time that has inhibited his ability to continue to do so.” He added, “As a result, surgery was the best course of action, and we look forward to having him back at full strength this season.”
Nyquist, 31, put up an impressive 15 goals and 42 points in 70 games this past season. He will go on LTIR which will give the Blue Jackets more room to add some pieces in free agency, but the team wasn’t exactly shy on cap space to begin with after a series of offseason moves that many thought would lead to the team making a free agency splash.
Nyquist is a regular 40-50 point player and will certainly be missed out of the Blue Jackets lineup. It’s a roster that added Max Domi and Mikko Koivu this offseason.
What’s the Next Step For Blue Jackets?
Portzline notes that Columbus might revisit the free agent market and kick tires on Mike Hoffman, Mikael Granlund, Erik Haula, Carl Soderberg, Michael Grabner, Connor Sheary, Andreas Athanasiou, Michael Frolik and more. That said, he also notes the team will be patient.
If the team doesn’t add anyone else, with Nyquist out, speculation is that that Nick Foligno or Boone Jenner will slide into left wing on the second line.
