Canucks Get Brutal Covid Test News, Games Will Be Delayed

Reports out of Vancouver are that multiple players have received positive COVID test results and games could be delayed a while.

Reports surfacing on Friday note that the Vancouver Canucks are going to be adding several names to the NHL’s COVID Protocol when the list comes out later today. As per reports by Darren Dreger of TSN there have been “a number of additional positive COVID-19 cases.” He later tweeted, “Hearing 8 players plus staff among the positive cases.” Additional reports, like one from Rick Dhaliwal of Sportsnet offered similar news, calling it an “interesting number” of names and not to be surprised if a good deal of the players have the virus.

Yesterday, news broke that Adam Gaudette was on the list. He was later joined by Travis Hamonic and the NHL put all Canucks on hold until April 6. In that release by the NHL, there was hope the team could be back by April 8, but as news comes out from additional tests, things don’t look good. Dhaliwal is not so sure and there are some who believe this delay could be a lengthy one. Details on the actual testing will not be made available, but the list of players will be shared Friday which should offer a better sense of how bad the news actually is

While the priority is making sure the players (and their families affected) are ok, the NHL must now find a way to reschedule, what could be a number of missed games. They’ll have one of the tightest schedules to close the season, and have some games tacked onto the end of the year.

Their game for Saturday, April 3rd against Edmonton should be easy to work around and moved to April 15th or 16th, but two games against Winnipeg and possibly two against Calgary will need to be reviewed.

This Could Get Ugly

Pierre LeBrun of TSN noted on Friday, “Canucks got more test results around 5:30 pm PT/8:30 pm ET last night and six more players had tested positive. Obviously there’s fear of more players testing positive today.” And John Shannon wrote, “Hearing things in Vancouver do not look good with the Canucks and Covid. Expectations could change, but don’t be surprised if shut down goes longer than next Thursday.”
