Nugent-Hopkins Turns Down Recent Five-Year Offer from Oilers

According to TSN’s Frank Seravalli, there’s nothing new to report in terms of the Edmonton Oilers and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins being any closer on a contract to extend the winger/center long-term. The latest talk is that the Oilers have tabled an offer but it wasn’t one the forward was willing to seriously consider.

Servalli notes, “No meaningful progress but that certainly [is] not for a lack of trying.” He adds, Nugent-Hopkins’ camp wasn’t flattered by the offer; supposedly a five-year term. “At this point, these two sides are going to continue talking, that’s what they’ve agreed to,” said Seravalli.

There is good news for Nugent-Hopkins fans who might wonder if the lack of an attractive offer might lead to the longest-serving Oiler being traded. That’s not going to happen unless things really fall apart. Seravalli explains:

They’re going to continue the dialogue and see if they can work something out and I have zero sense at this point that the Oilers have any interest in moving Nugent-Hopkins before the trade deadline even without a deal done. They’d like to keep him and try and find a way to win as well as keep him locked up long term. We’ll see if they can do that.

What Does the NHL Offseason Hold?

Whether a deal gets done or not now, the Oilers will likely hang onto the player during their playoff run and then revisit things in the offseason. Should the two sides fail to come to terms on an extension even after the season ends, no doubt Nugent-Hopkins will be one of, if not the most sought-after free agent on the market.

One move the Oilers could make if they think things will go sideways is striking up a deal with the Seattle Kraken who are rumored to be very interested in Nugent-Hopkins if he becomes available. They will have plenty of cap space and would love to have top-two, if not top-line center.
