Canucks Set Insanely High Trade Price for J.T. Miller

If the Vancouver Canucks are going to consider a trade, it will take strong offers from opposing GMs well ahead of the deadline.

If a team wants to pry J.T. Miller out of Vancouver, it’s going to take a pretty penny to do so. In other words, opposing GMs are going to need to come to play when they talk to new Canucks’ GM Patrick Allvin. Don’t waste his time with anything but a good offer, otherwise, he’s bound to end the conversation rather quickly.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, “if you are a contender that plans to bid on J.T. Miller closer to the March 21 trade deadline, you better make your best deal prior to March 21.” LeBrun added that the Canucks have set a high price for Miller in any potential trade and they want to know every team’s best offer well ahead of the rush that is the final few days of the deadline to make a deal. This is likely because the Canucks don’t even know if they want to trade him and likely because, should they, the return is the most important thing.

LeBrun adds:

Now, the Canucks’ front office has a few things to consider here because it’s not a guarantee they move him. He’s got a year and a half left on his deal. The front office, with new general manager Patrick Allvin, has to ask this question – where would the Canucks be in two years time when J.T. Miller’s deal is up? Is he part of what they view as the team moving forward?

What Do the Canucks Want in Return?

The team isn’t out of the playoff mix just yet. Assuming they eventually become sellers, LeBrun notes the Canucks have targeted and need more young prospects. He believes Allvin will want three to four prospects, (or three to four equivalent assets) before they seriously look at any trade offer.

It’s a high price to ask, but it makes sense. Miller is playing well and a big part of the Canucks’ offense. There’s no rush to move him now unless the deal is too good to pass up. They could move him before this deadline, or they could trade him in the off-season at the draft. The offers will still be there.

Right now, a Miller trade is up in the air. The Canucks aren’t sold on pulling the trigger and they aren’t shopping him. That said, if a team comes with the right offer, the organization will listen. They might even be convinced to make a trade if the offer is good enough. That decision, LeBrun says, is something the “Canucks’ revamped front office is going to tackle over the next couple of weeks.”
