Canadiens Thinking Twice About Trading Sean Monahan

It was believed that Sean Monahan moving at the NHL Trade Deadline was a given. But, are the Canadiens be thinking about keeping him?

Now part of the Montreal Canadiens, Sean Monahan returns to Calgary tonight to play against his former team the Calgary Flames. He was emotional talking about his return and thinking about the 656 games he played in a Flames jersey. As part of that roster, he scored 212 goals and added 250 assists. He was a great role model, current coach Darryl Sutter called him captain material and he was an ambassador for the Flames and the city of Calgary.

He spoke to Flames’ media and said when asked if he had a message for the fans, “Just thank you. They supported me from Day 1. I came in, 18 years old … It’s a special place. I really enjoyed my time here.” You could tell this is a big moment for him. It’s especially meaningful because he’s part of the Canadiens roster and he’s having a bit of a bounce-back season.

In fact, Monahan is playing so well (14 points in 22 games), Pierre LeBrun on Insider Trading says the Canadiens management team is discussing whether to keep Monahan instead of moving him at the trade deadline which many believed was a given. LeBrun says the forward has played well and has fitted in with the team on and off the ice. The consensus is likely that he’ll still be moved at the deadline, but the mere fact they’re discussing keeping him is interesting.

Would the Canadiens be better served holding onto a leader like Monahan? Sutter called him a captain and the Habs could certainly use that kind of leadership as they undergo a retooling/rebuild. The Canadiens might even get the chance to keep him at a much less costly rate than his current contract.

Or, if Monahan keeps playing well, could/should he be moved?
