Canadiens Thinking About Hiring NHL Agent as Next GM

The Montreal Canadiens are considering hiring a player agent as the team’s next general manager.

As per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Montreal Canadiens aren’t necessarily looking to hire a general manager that has a ton of GM experience. While the prerequisite to the job is that the candidate speaks French, having a vast resume with previous GM jobs listed on it is not.

New executive vice president Jeff Gorton has already acknowledged that he won’t rule out anyone and that he isn’t in a rush to make a decision. Friedman adds that Gorton will open up the search to player agents and is legitimately considering hiring an agent to be the team’s next manager. Friedman noted during the 32 Thoughts segment of Saturday night’s broadcast, “The person who I believe they are interested in who is an agent is Kent Hughes, who’s born in Montreal, he is bilingual, now in the Boston area so there is a connection to Gorton.”

Friedman also suggested that there might be more than the one name on the list, but did add that there has been no contact at this point and Gorton hasn’t reached out to anyone. All he knows is that Hughes is one of the agents, “or the agent” on Montreal’s radar. Hughes represents Patrice Bergeron, Kris Letang and formerly repped Vincent Lecavalier with Quartexx Management.

Gorton said that he would make a decision sometime after Christmas, which explains why he hasn’t reached out to any of his candidates. “Figuring out how we’re gonna go about picking the general manager, we’re gonna look at everybody that we think could be a fit,” he said. “So, I’m not gonna rule anybody out, I’m not gonna say yes or no to anybody”

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun is also reporting that the Canadiens are believed to have interest in Tampa Bay Lightning assistant GM Mathieu Darche. Darche has been told by the Lightning he is welcome to talk to other teams, including the Canadiens if he’d like.
