Canadiens Sign Goaltender Jake Allen to 2-Yr Extension

The Montreal Canadiens signed Jake Allen to a two-year extension, likely to have a goalie they can expose for the expansion draft.

In a bit of unexpected news, Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin continues to conduct business. On Wednesday, it is being reported that the team has locked in newly acquired goaltender Jake Allen to a two-year contract extension worth $2.875 million per season. It’s a bit unexpected because Allen still has one more season on his deal at $4.35.

This extension represents a big pay cut for Allen and it represents the Canadiens being committed to the netminder before he’s ever played a single game as a backup behind Carey Price. Certainly, one can argue this is strange timing.

There’s speculation this deal is about the NHL Expansion draft and if the Canadiens did this so that they might have an attractive goalie the Seattle Kraken would be interested in taking. If the Kraken franchise sees Allen’s salary as reasonable and he’s a potential starter for them, they might be enticed to take him. The Canadiens didn’t previously have a goaltender they could expose since Carey Price’s contract includes a NMC and Cayden Primeau is exempt from the draft.

If this isn’t about the draft or he’s not taken by Seattle, the team could look back at this deal and realize it’s a little expensive for a backup considering the market on goaltenders right now.

What Does This Mean for Gallagher?

The two situations might not be connected in any way, but some are wondering if this signing is directly or indirectly related to the contract issues between forward Brendan Gallagher and the team. The more money committed to players who aren’t playing essential roles on the Canadiens moving forward mean potentially less money available to re-sign the heart and soul of the organization.
