While the Montreal Canadiens have done some great work over this offseason, as per a report on Tuesday from TSN hockey insider Pierre LeBrun, talks between the Montreal Canadiens and forward Brendan Gallagher aren’t going all that well.

He notes that Gerry Johannson, agent for Brendan Gallagher, says contract talks have broken off with the player and the team. He adds, “Although Gallagher still has a another year on his deal so time for this to iron itself out. But talks have obviously not gone great so far.”

While not dire news, it’s also not great news for Canadiens fans as Gallagher is the heart-and-soul of the team and has scored 30+ goals in two of the last three seasons. He tied for the team goal-scoring lead in ’19-’20 and he was a major reason the Canadiens were able to surprise the Pittsburgh Penguins in during the play-in round of this year’s postseason.

It’s interesting that the Gallagher camp leaked news of the contract talks breaking down about two hours before a Marc Bergevin press conference with a new right winger. It’s not expected that Bergevin will be giving specific answers about Gallagher’s negotiations today.

Is Gallagher on a Long-Term Deal a Risk?

Perhaps the concern for the Canadiens is Gallagher’s consistent health over an 82-game schedule. There’s no questioning his heart, desire or compete level but, even at only 28 years old, there are questions about whether or not his body can keep playing at the pace it has.

There may also be questions about who to commit long-term money to. The Canadiens will have approximately, $19 million to sign Philip Danault, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Arturri Lekhonen and Joel Armia – this is given Byron and Tatar contracts get traded.
