Victor Mete Placed on Waivers by Canadiens… Upgrade Coming?

Victor Mete was one of a few key names to hit the NHL waiver wire Sunday. It seems likely that a team claims him before Monday’s deadline.

Victor Mete Montreal Canadiens

As per a few reports, some interesting names hit the waiver wire on Sunday, among them Victor Mete of the Montreal Canadiens. There was talk early in the season that Mete was looking for a different situation but the Canadiens weren’t willing to trade him or move him on waivers thinking he might get plucked by another team. They wanted to keep him available for their roster. Now, ahead of Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline, it appears the Canadiens are looking to make an upgrade.

Outside of listing the others players to hit the waiver wire — Alex Biega (Det), Danny Dekeyser (Det), Sami Vatanen (NJ), Josh Healey (Nas), Cody Goloubef (Ott) — Pierre LeBrun writes, “Mete on waivers would also seem to reinforce the notion that Montreal will go pick up a D before the deadline tomorrow.”

Mete has played very little this season but has an extremely strong track record in terms of his impact on scoring chances for and against. At just 22 years old, he’s got a lot of upside, even if he hasn’t necessarily realized it in Montreal. It would be surprising if another team doesn’t claim him. Should they, that will free up a little more cap space for the Canadiens, who also have money to spend with the news that Brendan Gallagher has been sidelined until the playoffs.

Mete Has to Get Claimed, No?

A number of scribes for teams around the NHL saw the Mete news and started theoretically plugging him into their respective lineups. It’s unlikely one of those teams who are looking for a defenseman, or who wants to grab a young player and give him another shot, doesn’t take a calculated risk here.

Most people believe GM Marc Bergevin will be taking at least one final swing before Monday and this Mete move could be the start of whatever it is he’s got planned.
