As per a report by Chris Johnston, the Toronto Maple Leafs might be a team that kicks tires on Mattias Janmark out of the Chicago Blackhawks organization. Janmark has been made a healthy scratch ahead of Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline and there’s talk that with a few of the names Toronto had their eyes on no longer being available, Janmark could be a new target.

Speculation is that Janmark is a name that was recently added to the trade bait boards this season, but what’s interesting is that Janmark might not really be all that new a target for the Maple Leafs. There were rumors last year that the Maple Leafs were a fan of this player. In October of 2020, speculation surfaced that he could be on their radar and it looks like GM Kyle Dubas may have circled back here.
Johnston notes, “Colorado could be a fit for Janmark, I think the Leafs could potentially be linked to him and the acquisition cost and the cost on his contract are both pretty affordable.” Janmark signed with the Blackhawks in free agency after leaving the Dallas Stars. A $2.25 million cap hit, the Leafs would have some space available to add him if the moves they made to put Frederik Andersen on LTI are a signal that he’s not going to be back before the end of the regular season.
It’s not likely the Leafs would give up a ton to land Janmark, who has 10 goals and 19 points in 41 games for the Blackhawks this season. Scott Powers of The Athletic writes, “A scout thought a few weeks ago Janmark could fetch a 2nd-rounder. That was when Janmark was pretty hot. He has one point in his last 10 games. We’ll see.”
