Bruins and Lindholm Finalize 8-Year, $6.5M Per Contract Extension

The Boston Bruins aren’t wasting any time getting defenseman Hampus Lindholm locked into a long-term contract extension.

** Update: The Boston Bruins and Lindholm have finalized an 8-year deal at $6.5 million per season.

What the Anaheim Ducks were unwilling to do the Boston Bruins had no issue with. Defenseman Hampus Lindholm was traded by the Ducks because they weren’t prepared to commit long-term to the blueliner. The Bruins got right to work on trying to finalize a deal that will keep Lindholm a part of the Bruins’ organization until he’s 36 years old.

According to a few reports, including one from TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, “The Bruins and Hampus Lindholm’s camp are progressing in talks towards an 8-year extension. Could be completed Sunday.”

Eight years is the ask Lindholm was rumored to have wanted from the Ducks. One of the most sought-after defensemen on the trade market this season, his ask is rumored to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $6.5 million per season, as per Chris Johnston. It’s a deal that should be fine for the first few seasons, especially if he plays with Charlie McAvoy. It will be the later years of the deal that fans will question.

Reactions to the rumored deal are mixed. Some fans think it’s a big overpay based on his underlying numbers and that it’s no surprise the Ducks ultimately decided to move the player. Others think this isn’t too bad a number. Typically, if there are enough people on both sides, that tends the suggest the deal is about right compared to market value. It will be intriguing to see if the deal includes trade protection in the later years of the contract.

Lindholm has five goals and 22 points this season. He’s broken the 30-point barrier with the Ducks in three seasons between 2013 and 2018. During the 2018-19 season, he scored 44 points in 76 games.
