As per multiple reports, the Ottawa Senators have acquired defenseman Travis Hamonic from Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2022 third-round pick. The Senators have confirmed the trade and will have him for one additional season after this one at a cost of $3 million.

Hamonic has three goals and four assists in 24 games for the Canucks this season. The former second-round pick by the New York Islanders in 2008 signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Canucks during the offseason, but missed the start of the season for personal reasons.
Dan Rosen of NHL.com writes, “The Senators give the Canucks a third-round pick in this year’s draft, one that originally belonged to Vancouver, for D Travis Hamonic. Young teams need veteran players around as they rebuild. It’s said they help drive the room in a rebuild. Maybe that’s a reason for this trade?”
Hamonic is widely considered a leader and a well-liked guy in the locker room. He has also spent time with the Canucks, New York Islanders, and Calgary Flames.
That the Canucks were able to clear out $3 million in cap space for a player they weren’t hoping to keep and pick up a third-round pick in the process is being seen as a big win by a number of fans and media.
