Bruins Might Be Among Multiple Teams Interested in P.K. Subban [Rumor]

Apparently, a few teams are interested in trading for P.K. Subban. Are the Boston Bruins among them?

As per Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now, multiple teams are interested in New Jersey Devils’ defenseman P.K. Subban in a possible trade. It’s not clear if it would be a deal for the entire season or as a rental closer to the deadline, but Murphy reports that there is interest.

Among the teams he mentions is the Boston Bruins, although Murphy doesn’t offer much more than suggesting a number of Bruins fans would like to see Subban in a B’s jersey. The Bruins, like many teams, would have a difficult time fitting in Subban’s $9 million salary, even if it is only for this one more season. Subban’s current deal expires at the end of this year but his drop in production means his salary is a huge albatross for any team that takes him in at the full price tag.

Murphy writes:

Looks like a surprisingly large contingent of Boston Bruins fans wouldn’t mind New Jersey Devils and longtime Bruins nemesis PK Subban in Bruins uniform this season. I will write more on this and the potential of that becoming a reality either later today or tomorrow but I think it would be a great move on and off the ice for the Bruins.

His follow up article has not dropped yet and that was a couple of days ago that he posted he’d be offering more.

Who Would Be Interested in Subban?

For starters, the only teams that really have the cap space to consider him as an option are the Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, and Anaheim Ducks. Of those teams, one would need to look at who might need a rental for one season and want to ice a competitive team. No one really stands out.

While Subban’s actually salary will only be $2 million — thanks to a bonus payment — that cap hit is still a mess. The Devils could retain up to 50% and they could even use a third team to retain more, but it’s still a gamble for any team.

The Bruins are likely still looking for a defenseman, but they also potentially have a need for another center with news that David Krejci will be returning to the roster this season.
