Bill Peters Gone As Flames Head Coach

Bill Peters has been fired by the Calgary Flames as head coach.

The Calgary Flames have accepted the resignation of Bill Peters. And with that, Peters is no longer the head coach of the Flames and Geoff Ward will serve as interim head coach.

Frank Seravalli of TSN broke the news that Peters is out and likely as a result of the completed investigation into allegations of abuse brought forth by former player Akim Aliu who shared details and brought events to light many of which were backed by other players, that Peters used racial slurs towards him.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t just instances of racial insensitivity but allegations of physical abuse from former players too. Michal Jordan, who played for the Hurricanes under Peters between 2014-16, alleged that Peters physically abused him and other players on the bench. These were reports confirmed by current Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour, which likely was the key part of the accusations that would have led to Calgary terminating Peters as coach.

What’s Next For Peters and the NHL?

Keeping in mind that Peters admitted to the allegations and wrote a letter to GM Brad Treliving apologizing for his actions, the Flames didn’t have much choice in the matter and it would have looked negatively on the franchise should they have tried to keep him.

So too, there won’t be a lot of backlash in the NHL over this decision and there is speculation other current and former coaches may have their names brought out into the public as players come forward to tell their stories.

An old saying: sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me! But in this day and age of hurt feelings none of that man-up and get on with it applies anymore! Heaven forbid that I would agree with such abhorrent behaviour from coaches and commentators, but these athletes don’t seem to mind the salaries! If this keeps up,we’re gonna run out of coaches!
