Are Canadiens Ready to Bet Big with High-Risk Bobrovsky Trade?

The Canadiens need help in net, and Bobrovsky’s name is suddenly in the mix. High risk, high reward—would you pull the trigger?

The Montreal Canadiens’ crease has been a mess this season, hands down the thing holding them back from legit contender status. Sam Montembeault’s numbers are ugly, Jakub Dobeš has been hot and cold as hell, and Jacob Fowler’s got that upside, but he’s not there yet to shoulder the load on his own.

Put it all together, and the Canadiens sit near the bottom of the league in save percentage. Most nights, they’re winning in spite of their goaltending.

The Canadiens Loosely Linked to Sergei Bobrovsky in Trade Rumours

Sergei Bobrovsky is almost 38, but he carries a resume that stands out. He’s collected two Vezina Trophies, two straight Stanley Cup wins, and he seems wired for high-stakes games. That said, his 2025-26 numbers are hardly inspiring (.871 SV% in a down season for Florida overall). So, who really knows what he’s got left in the tank? However, the pedigree plus the Canadiens’ needs set up a potential move that’s really quite interesting.

Would bringing him in fix everything? Maybe a bit. Maybe not. It’s more complicated than that.

Could Sergei Bobrovsky be traded from the Panthers to the Canadiens?

Why A Bobrovsky to Montreal Move Might Work

Bobrovsky is on an expiring contract, and he brings experience and calm that the Canadiens simply don’t have in goal right now. Even in a down year, he tends to stabilize things. And sometimes a goalie just needs a different environment to get rolling again. Montreal controls the puck better this season than Florida has, so he might not face the same chaos. Even a small jump back toward his usual form would be a massive upgrade compared to what the Canadiens are getting now.

The obvious hurdles are his age and his contract. Fitting a $10 million hit at the deadline takes some serious maneuvering. And even with retention, it probably costs a lot to make the deal work. And this isn’t the dominant Bobrovsky from a few years ago.

If Montreal pays a premium and gets the version we’ve seen this season, that’s a tough pill to swallow. It’s also not a long-term answer—Fowler is meant to grow into the job, and the organization still believes in him. On top of that, Florida hasn’t totally decided what direction it’s taking. They might move him, they might not, and other teams are sniffing around too. There’s no guarantee Montreal even wins the bidding.

Where Does All This Leave the Canadiens?

A deal like this would be all about the playoffs. Bobrovsky could absolutely settle the crease and give the team a fighting chance. He’s a rental, and a costly one. In addition, there’s a real risk attached. If Kent Hughes can make the numbers work without giving up a huge piece of the future, it’s worth talking about. If not, they may just have to ride out what they’ve got.

With the deadline creeping closer, this is certainly a storyline to watch. Would you make the trade if it meant giving up a first-rounder and a solid prospect?
