When it comes to Connor McDavid reaching 100 points, is it even a question any longer? More people are now asking when, not if and, frankly, how many more points he gets than 100 once he reaches the incredible feat. On Monday night, McDavid scored two goals and added two assists. He now sits at 91 points after 50 games.
After he became the first player to record 30 goals and 90 points within the first 50 games of a season since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr in 1995-96, it seems clear McDavid isn’t going to be stopped. The superstar center needs nine points in six games. Barring some sort of total collapse, he should be able to get there with ease. He’s got three more games versus the Canucks this season. It might only take those three games to do it.
Pierre LeBrun at the Athletic spoke to Wayne Gretzky, who said of what McDavid has done up to this point, “He’s gone to another level.” He added:
His physical play is a lot higher than it’s been in the past. His body language is that he doesn’t want to lose, and it’s infectious through the hockey club. It’s very, very noticeable to the person watching the games.”
Just to give you a better idea of dominant he’s been and how much of a roll he’s currently on… look at his last seven games:
That’s 20 points in seven games and he only needs to do 45% of that over the next six contests to get to 100. Sure, he’s had a handful of games when he’s been kept off the scoresheet, but he typically responds to those with an offensive outburst. Even if he goes the next two with no points, the seven he’ll likely get the following two games gets him almost there.
What Do the Oilers Think?
You won’t catch McDavid talking about it. Even when asked, he plays it down. “It’s a number,” McDavid said after the game. “If I get there, great. If not, it’s not the end of the world either.”
You can be sure his teammates will be pulling for him with the playoff spot secured. When asked if the Oilers will try to help McDavid get to the 100-point marker, defenseman Tyson Barrie said, “I don’t know if we need to try to get him there. He’ll just get there himself.”
