Artemi Panarin Out For Season After Suffering Injury in Wilson Scrum

Not only was Tom Wilson not suspended, but it’s been learned that Artemi Panarin will miss the rest of the regular season after the scrum.

The hockey world is talking about Tom Wilson today and they’ll keep talking after news New York Rangers star forward is done for the season after Wilson’s actions resulted in an injury. Panarin looked to be ok after the scrum and altercation with Wilson during Monday’s game but he left the contest and didn’t return. The Rangers announced on Tuesday he was finished for the year.

This news won’t sit well with a lot of fans after it was also learned on Tuesday that Wilson wasn’t going to be suspended for his actions, merely fined $5K, the maximum allowable under the CBA. This is surely going to send a message that the second a player gets involved in a scrum they are fair game. Regardless of the size difference or reason the player got involved (in this case it was Panarin trying to get Wilson off his teammate), once involved, practically anything is fair game.

It seemed clear that Wilson crossed a line and many are wondering why George Parros of the NHL Player Safety Committee would let Wilson — who has a history of fines and suspensions in the league — off without real punishment. That Panarin is now going to be missing the rest of the year only adds salt to that wound for Rangers fans.

Sure, there weren’t many games left in the season and yes, the Rangers were out of the running for the playoffs. None of that really matters. Injuries are to be factored in when discipline is involved and for a player like Wilson not to be levied with a single game only suggests the Rangers might take matters into their own hands.

These two teams will meet again on Wednesday. Fans in New York are calling for the Rangers to call up Mason Geertsen so that someone can deal with Wilson on the ice.
