7 Trades to Expect In The NHL As 2020 Begins

Here are seven NHL players we believe will be prime targets as 2020 gets underway and team are calling each other to make trades.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau

There has been no shortage of talk surrounding the future of Jean-Gabriel Pageau in Ottawa. A player who is having a career year for the Senators, he’s playing himself into a large raise that some suggest the Senators are unwilling to pay because their priority is a player like Brady Thachuk. Pageau’s season is ripe to become one of those examples where a team signs him in the offseason and way overspends.

That said, Pageau is a useful center playing above where he probably should be slotted on a contending team. A playoff contender could use him heading towards the post season if the price is right. The tricky part is, what is the price?

The Senators would like to keep Pageau but can likely only do so if the number is reasonable. Discussions have apparently already started so the Senators can feel out where Pageau is at.

If the number is too high, there’s lots of talk surrounding him the Edmonton Oilers are at the forefront of insider speculation. Other teams to watch could be Colorado, Pittsburgh and Calgary now that they’ve freed up some cap space.

At the end of the day, there aren’t a lot of third-line centers making $4 million per season and that might be Pageau’s ask.

Sam Bennett

There is a ton of interest in Sam Bennett, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Earlier, the offers were low and the Flames were laughing off teams trying to inquire about his availability. Perhaps those offers have gotten a bit better because speculation is the Flames aren’t laughing any longer.

Friedman adds that the Calgary Flames don’t want to move Bennett but has noted that since he’s not always getting useful minutes and if the offers is strong enough, the Flames are willing to consider a move. Considering GM Brad Treliving just came out and said he wasn’t close to done making deals after he moved Michael Frolik, maybe Bennett is a piece in a larger deal?
