Will Brady Tkachuk Fold Under the Immense Pressure the Panthers Just Placed on Him?
Brady Tkachuk felt different pressure in Ottawa, but now he’s facing new pressures in Florida that he didn’t expect. Can he handle it?
Ottawa had real questions about Brady Tkachuk‘s leadership qualities. A useful player on the ice who never shied away from standing up for his teammates or playing an aggressive style, he often ran into issues off the ice, where he was criticized for not handling speculation about his future well and for focusing too much on building his brand.
Ultimately, Tkachuk found the pressure of staying in Ottawa a challenge. After about 18 months of saying he wasn’t going anywhere, Brady met with GM Steve Staois following a playoff sweep to request a trade out of Ottawa. Florida was his only desired destination. Things came to a head following success on the Olympic stage, where Emily Kaplan of ESPN reported, “For players like Brady Tkachuk and Connor Hellebuyck, it was hard going back to their Canadian markets.”
It’s an interesting theory, but it doesn’t hold much water with fans who pointed out that Auston Matthews didn’t have an issue coming back to Toronto.
Brady Tkachuk Got His Wish
Brady got what he wanted. He’s in Florida now, where the weight of being in a Canadian market is gone. That said, new pressures have been thrown his way, two of which were unexpected: the injuries to Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand.
To get Tkachuk, the Panthers gave up a lot. He wasn’t being viewed as the savior, but this was a player that the club invested heavily in. So much so, the pieces they used to get Tkachuk couldn’t be used to get Connor Hellebuyck. Florida made their bet, and now Brady needs to pay it off.
“The Panthers gave up a bundle of futures and dedicated most of their new cap space to the younger Tkachuk brother, who torched his legacy as Ottawa’s captain to chase a Cup. With Florida running into major injury issues again, the pressure is on Tkachuk to deliver as a star contributor. Through four games, he hasn’t recorded a point. A bad year would make his contract extension talks next summer trickier, too.”
Can Brady Tkachuk Handle the Pressure?
To some, Brady is still a child. He’s overly focused on his podcast. He fights at the start of games before the puck drops, simply because the narrative surrounding him heading into that game is negative. He laughs at teammates, then lies about it, suggesting the truth is being twisted. He posed issues in a Senators locker room that was reportedly happy to have that distraction gone.

Now, he’ll be asked to pick up the slack with two key players out of the lineup, and people will wonder whether he’ll be up to the task. When things got heated in Ottawa, he bolted. There’s no bolting in Florida. The excuses are gone. He’s playing with his brother. He’s playing on a contending team. He’s in the warm weather, south of the border, and living the life.
Now is the time he steps up. He doesn’t have to be a leader, but he needs to show he’s a superstar player.
