Wild Claim Travis Dermott Off of Waivers from Oilers
The Minnesota Wild claim veteran defenseman Travis Dermott off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers
The Minnesota Wild have added to their blue line by claiming defenseman Travis Dermott off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers. The news follows a 7-1 drubbing by the Oilers over the Wild, and Wild President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin announced the move Friday.

Dermott, 27, has appeared in 10 games for the Oilers this season, recording three shots, two penalty minutes, 10 blocked shots, and six hits. Edmonton has been adding to their blue line and with Ty Emberson playing well and Troy Stecher taking on a bigger role, there wasn’t much room for Dermott after the Oilers claimed Alec Regula off of waivers from the Boston Bruins.
A native of Newmarket, Ontario, Dermott brings experience and defensive depth to Minnesota’s roster. The Oilers were likely hoping Dermott would pass through. Since he didn’t Edmonton will likely look for more depth on the market.
Dermott Will Fill a Hole for the Wild with Some Key Defenseman Out of Action
The Wild noted in their release that over an eight-year NHL career, Dermott has played 339 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Arizona Coyotes, and Edmonton Oilers. Known for his reliable defensive play, Dermott has tallied 62 points (16 goals, 46 assists), 130 penalty minutes, 347 shots, 316 blocked shots, and 391 hits while maintaining a career plus-12 rating.
Originally drafted 34th overall by Toronto in 2015, Dermott made his NHL debut in January 2018, notching an assist against Vancouver. He also boasts a strong AHL track record, with 42 points and a plus-26 rating across 88 career games, including a Calder Cup championship run with the Toronto Marlies in 2018.
It’s not clear that he’ll play a huge role with the Wild or how he’ll fit when players like Jonas Brodin or Jacob Middleton return from injury.
