Why the Maple Leafs Are Pursuing Top Rangers Center in Rumored Trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly among the teams interested in Vincent Trocheck. What is their game plan?

Despite only recently firing their GM and hiring new management, the Toronto Maple Leafs are already exploring ways to reshape their roster ahead of next season, and one potential target has emerged from the New York Rangers.

According to TSN insider Darren Dreger, Toronto is among the teams expressing interest in veteran center Vincent Trocheck, as the Rangers look to move his contract.

Speaking on OverDrive, Dreger noted that it would come as little surprise if New York attempted to shed Trocheck’s deal, adding that the Maple Leafs are “among the teams that have some interest.” The 32-year-old is entering the fifth year of a seven-year contract with an average annual value of $5.625 million, making him a potentially valuable but complex acquisition.

Trocheck remains a productive player. He recorded 16 goals and 53 points in 67 games during the 2025-26 season, finishing among the team’s top scorers behind players like Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafrenière. His ability to contribute offensively while playing a responsible two-way game could make him an appealing fit for a Leafs team looking to strengthen its depth down the middle.

Trocheck could slot into a second-line center role, potentially shifting John Tavares into a more favorable third-line position. However, acquiring him won’t be easy. The Rangers reportedly set a high asking price at the trade deadline, and that stance may not change heading into the NHL Draft.

Are the Maple Leafs Already Looking to Speed Up This Retool?

It’s an interesting news nugget from Dreger, especially given the timing. With John Chayka barely in place as general manager and major changes already underway—including a coaching shakeup—the Maple Leafs’ talks with other teams about players who may be available via trade feel premature.

That said, there is a growing pressure to improve the roster around core stars like Auston Matthews and William Nylander, with some pressure on the Leafs to make Matthews feel like this team is taking positive steps. Matthews wants to see meaningful upgrades, and Trocheck would arguably be among the bigger ones.

If Toronto can find a way to make a deal work, Trocheck could fill a key need and play a significant role in reshaping the team moving forward.
