Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card Sells For More Than $1 Million at Auction

Wayne Gretzky’s rookie card sold for $1.29 million at auction, per reports on Friday. That’s another record to add to his collection.

Wayne Gretzky’s name is synonymous with hockey records. He now add another record to his name as he owns the distinction of having the No. 1-selling rookie card, his becoming hockey’s first to cost more than US $1 million when it fetched $1.29 million at auction.

The $1.29 million price tag includes a 20 per cent buyer’s premium.

Dallas-based Heritage Auctions sold the card and notes that it was one of just two featuring No. 99 from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979 and graded a perfect “gem mint” score from the Professional Sports Authenticator grading service. It was the grading of the card, in combination with the player that made the piece of paper so valuable.

The PSA has evaluated more than 5,711 Gretzky cards and only two got that grade. To give you an idea of how rare that is, there are more than 300 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie cards with the same “gem mint” rating.

For the buyer who purchased the card, it’s quite the investment, even though it’s hard to imagine that the card fetches more than that ever again. Who knows though… as we’re learning, people have more money to spend in a pandemic than we ever could have imagined.

It just goes to show how good a player Gretzky was. Decades after leaving the game, he’s still breaking records.
