Washington Capitals Trade 2nd-Round Pick For Senators’ Connor Brown

The Washington Capitals have given up a second-round pick in 2024 to acquire Connor Brown from the Ottawa Senators.

For most of the day during Wednesday’s free agent frenzy, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported that on-again, off-again trade talks between the Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators were on again Wednesday morning as the two teams were trying to work out a deal that would see Connor Brown headed to the Oilers. The Sens and Oilers were linked as trade partners at the NHL Draft and a deal was almost completed right around the opening of free agency.

But, as things were reportedly getting close the deal fell apart because the Oilers couldn’t move out a contract to make room for Brown. The Washington Capitals snuck in and grabbed the player in a deal, sending a second-round pick in 2024 the other way.

The Oilers were busy over the past 12 hours. They signed Evander Kane to an extension, inked Jack Campbell to a free agency contract, convinced defenseman Brett Kulak to return on a four-year extension, and tried to trade for Brown, all within the span of half a day. The connection was apparently the history Brown had with the Erie Otters, who also happened to be the team Connor McDavid played for prior to being drafted and joining the Oilers. Brown and McDavid were extremely productive and Edmonton liked the idea of having Brown on a current contract at a cost of $3.6 million. He becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

In the end, the Capitals are going to be happy having Brown on their roster. He played the most minutes for the Senators last season among forwards and he could fit in nicely as part of the Caps top nine. Where Brown will slot in will be intriguing but he should be effective. Great deal for Washington.

Senators Kept Making Moves

The Senators were also busy. They traded for Alex DeBrincat at the draft and signed Claude Giroux to a three-year deal early in free agency. Some will question why the Senators did this, but it’s likely to remove some salary they can turn around and spend to improve their blue line.
