Victor Hedman Releases Statement About His Struggles and Future with Lightning

Get the latest on Victor Hedman’s future in the NHL. His emotional statement reveals insight into his potential return to the league.

It appears defenseman Victor Hedman will return to the NHL, but he’s got a road to travel before he does. The Tampa Bay Lightning played these playoffs without their superstar, who took time away for personal reasons. On Tuesday, he released an emotional statement hinting at his future.

It’s both cryptic and potentially positive. There is no timeline on his NHL return, but it doesn’t suggest his plan is to retire.

STATEMENT FROM CAPTAIN VICTOR HEDMAN

“I’ve spent most of my life in this game, and nearly all of my career with this organization. Wearing this jersey—and serving as captain—is the greatest responsibility of my professional life. That responsibility doesn’t only apply on the ice. Over the past couple of months, I made the decision to step away and focus on my mental health. It was not an easy decision, but it was the right one.”

Suggesting he’s not done playing, he added:

“I’ve always believed that being a leader means doing what’s best for the team. In this case, it also meant doing what was necessary to take care of myself, so I can be the best player, teammate, husband and father I expect to be.”

Hedman Is Improving, Which Is Good News

Hedman noted that he’s received support from his family, his teammates, the organization, and his therapist. “I’m in a much better place today.”

He finished with a message for anyone else who might be struggling, including other players in the NHL. “This is something that exists in our game more than people see. If this moment helps make it easier for others to take care of themselves when they need to, that matters.”

“I’m proud of this team, and I look forward to what’s ahead.”

Hedman has three seasons remaining on his current contract. The Lightning will need him to be mentally and physically healthy if they want to rebound from another disappointing first-round loss.
