Pierre LeBrun noted on the most recent episode of TSN Insider Trading that there is some interesting news coming out of Vancouver as it pertains to the Canucks’ plans heading into the NHL Trade Deadline.
LeBrun said that some of the discussion in Vancouver is focused around the health and status of forward Micheal Ferland. Unsure of where he currently stands, there a plan to send him to the Utica Comets as part of his next steps towards a return but, in the meantime, they are also looking at other options should Ferland not be ready.
Since the Canucks are likely headed towards the postseason, LeBrun notes that right before the trade deadline, the team will take a long look at whether or not they can rely on Ferland for a playoff run. If there’s any doubt, they are currently working on a backup plan.
It is believed that internally, the Canucks have discussed the option of seeing what it would take to acquire Wayne Simmonds from the New Jersey Devils.
A popular forward in the rumor mill, the Devils are certainly sellers and Simmonds will be coveted because he can add grit and physicality while being a player who can score.
Right now, the Canucks aren’t making moves to acquire Simmonds, just seeing what it might take, should they choose to. The immediate plan is to hope Ferland is ok.
