Flames No Longer Trading T.J. Brodie, Plus Sam Bennett News

The Calgary Flames appear to have shifted gears with the news of Mark Giordano’s injury. What does that mean for T.J. Brodie? Plus, what’s going on with Sam Bennett?

With the uncertainty surrounding Mark Giordano’s injury in Calgary, even though things may not be drastically serious, plans for the Flames seemed to have changed.

Pierre LeBrun said on Thursday TSN’s Insider Trading, Giordano’s injury affects the chances the Flames will move fellow defenseman T.J. Brodie.

Brodie was a d-man a few teams had their eyes on. LeBrun noted that many teams believed he might be available in exchange for a forward but now, “The sense is that the Flames will have to go all hands on deck with their remaining d to get through this Giordano injury.” He added, there’s actually a sense by some that the Flames are concerned enough about Gio’s injury that they may considering adding another defenseman.

At the end of the day, LeBrun admitted that Brodie is an unrestricted free agent so he could still be moved, especially if Giordano returns sooner than expected, but moving Brodie has moved well down the list of Calgary’s top priorities.

While Brodie might be staying put, one player the TSN panel believes could be moved is forward Sam Bennett.

Darren Dreger noted that some GM’s around the NHL are wondering what the Flames want in exchange for the inconsistent forward who hasn’t exactly found a permanent spot in the Flames lineup. Dreger said Bennett’s name has been out there for a long time and while the Flames aren’t shopping him nor are they keenly interested in moving him, Bennett may want a chance to try somewhere else.

Often a fourth-line player for the Flames, Bennett believes he’s better than that and wants a chance to show it, even if that means not doing so in Calgary.
