Vancouver Canucks Acquire Ethan Bear from Hurricanes
Defenseman Ethan Bear has been traded to the Vancouver Canucks from the Carolina Hurricanes, as per reports.
The Vancouver Canucks have trade for defenseman Ethan Bear. Rumors of Bear being moved started to gain traction this week and the Canucks were linked to the blueliner for months. With a report that Bear had requested a trade and with the Hurricanes not putting him into the lineup this season, Elliotte Friedman noted that a trade was likely coming soon, with Vancouver among the favorites. The trade became official on Friday.
Multiple reports have Bear moving to the Canucks for an AHL player and a pick. The Hurricanes are also retaining some salary in the deal, according to reports. Pierre LeBrun reports, the Hurricanes will retain 18 percent of Ethan Bear’s $2.2 M salary and cap hit.
The trade details, as they are coming to light, are Bear to Vancouver along with center Lane Pederson to Carolina for a 2023 5th RD pick. Bear addresses a need on the right-hand side and is a good buy-low option for the Canucks. He will get an opportunity to rebound his career which seems to have stalled somewhat. If he plays well, he could move up the Canuck depth chart.
Popular Twitter analytics account JFresh lists Bear as “a puck-moving defenceman who never really settled in with Carolina. Results were okay in a depth spot but he had better two-way results in a bigger role in EDM. Easy to forget he played some of the biggest minutes in the NHL in 19-20.” They add, “Bear has skill and a solid track record including some heavy minutes. Lost his spot in CAR after struggling with COVID.”
In a corresponding move, the Canucks announced that forward William Lockwood has been reassigned to their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks.
