Tyson Barrie Sticks with Edmonton Oilers on 3-Year Deal

The Edmonton Oilers retained defenseman Tyson Barrie on a 3-year extension. He’ll join Cody Ceci and Evan Bouchard on the right side.

On Tuesday night, news broke that the Edmonton Oilers and Tyson Barrie were finalizing the details on a three-year deal. GM Ken Holland decided to roll with a much different looking right side after he lost Adam Larsson to Seattle. He traded Ethan Bear, brought in Cody Ceci and signed Barrie on a team-friendly extension.

Barrie tells TSN that it was “kind of a no-brainer to go back and make it work” with the Oilers. He loved the fact the team is much better and just couldn’t quite get it done in the playoffs. Says he’s “looking forward” to getting back and doesn’t think the team is as far off as many believe.

Barrie had a busy week. He celebrated his birthday, his wife gave birth to a baby boy and he’s signed a deal to stick around in Edmonton.

Barrie will be back running the Oilers power play, but the idea this season will be to usher in Evan Bouchard to share that role and Holland really wanted to clear a path for Bouchard to play a lot more this season. Moving Bear was central to that happening and the GM must believe Barrie as the power play quarterback gives Edmonton a better shot to win now.

Where Does Barrie Fit for the Oilers?

It’s likely that Barrie will pair with Darnell Nurse again, while newly-acquired Duncan Keith will probably pair with Bouchard. Ceci will fill out the bottom pair, likely splitting time with Bouchard and Kris Russell, William Lagesson and possibly Philip Broberg will get a look on the left side, assuming the Oilers don’t sign someone else.

Regardless of what fans think about the Oilers defense corps, signing Barrie to a 3 year deal x $4.5 million, — just $750,000 more than what was deemed a discount deal last season — is great term and AAV.
