Maple Leafs Sign Petr Mrazek to Three-Year Deal at $11.4 Million

The Toronto Maple Leafs have their second goalie with they signed Petr Mrazek to a three-year contract for $11.4 million.

When the Toronto Maple Leafs sign goaltender Petr Mrazek to a three-year, $11.4 million contract, you have to know that David Ayres – the Zamboni driver who made history by replacing Mrazek in late February 2020 to beat the Maple Leafs in one of the feel-good stories of the NHL season – was smiling. Let’s hope the Maple Leafs’ fans also are sharing that emotion.

Mrazek Will Be a Good Partner for Jack Campbell

For sure, Mrazek brings experience and capable goaltending to the Maple Leafs, and seems to be a good partner with last season’s emerging star Jack Campbell. Mrazek’s contract calls for him to earn $3.8 million per season, which is about $1.2 million savings over what previous starting goalie Frederik Andersen made during his last contract with the Maple Leafs.

Andersen, by the way, completed a flip-flop with Mrazek and is on his way to Carolina to take over the starting job with the Hurricanes. In the tweet below, you can see Mrazek’s analytics.

Mrazek Adds Value to the Maple Leafs Lineup

While both Mrazek and Andersen suffered through injury-plagued seasons, it looks as if an injured Mrazek might just be an upgrade on an injured Andersen. Last season the 29-year-old Mrazek had a 6-2-3 record; but, he also recorded three shutouts in his six victories. He recored a .923 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.06.

Mrazek was drafted during the fifth-round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, and has a career record of 129-97-31. The Maple Leafs will be his fourth NHL team.
