Tristan Jarry Seen as the Favorite to Lead Oilers Goaltending Trio

Is Tristan Jarry still the favorite to be the Edmonton Oilers’ No. 1 goaltender?

Much to the delight of their fans, the Edmonton Oilers revamped the goaltending position this offseason.

GM Stan Bowman signed the veteran Stanley Cup winner Frederik Andersen and traded for the young, high-potential option in Devon Levi.

Both acquisitions have Oilers Nation excited to see if something new will change their fortunes in net, however, that doesn’t mean Tristan Jarry is going anywhere. In fact, team reporter Allan Mitchell of The Athletic believes it will be Jarry who ultimately lands the starting job when it matters most.

Mitchell wrote:

“Based on evidence, Jarry is the most likely candidate to win the day. He was Bowman’s first choice to fix the position, he was playing well before getting hurt, and he’s being paid like a starter.

Who will play the most during the regular season? Who will own the net in the postseason? Bet on Jarry, the man with two years left on his contract, with the knowledge that Andersen can go on extended runs of excellence and Levi represents goalie future,”

The 31-year-old Jarry, as Mitchell mentioned, has two years left on the five-year, $26.875 million contract extension he originally signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023. He went 9-6-2 across 16 starts upon arriving in Edmonton last season, sporting a 3.86 goals-against average and a .858 save percentage with one shutout along the way.

Jarry’s contract makes him likely to receive the most opportunity and leash of the three, though if he’s not performing much better than he did during his first half-season as an Oiler, then new head coach Mike Babcock surely won’t be afraid to make a change in goal.

In the end, all three of Jarry, Andersen, and Levi will and should see action, and they should all benefit from having each other to ensure no one has to shoulder the pressure and workload of being a clear-cut No. 1.
