The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a notable addition to their defensive lineup by signing Swedish defenseman John Klingberg to a one-year contract. The deal was announced by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, although it took some time for the financial terms to be disclosed. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli also confirmed the one-year agreement and it was later confirmed the deal is worth $4.15 million.
Klingberg, 30 years old, spent the previous season splitting his time between the Anaheim Ducks and the Minnesota Wild. In 67 games, he recorded 10 goals and 23 assists, showcasing his offensive capabilities from the blue line.
Following his trade to the Minnesota Wild at the trade deadline, Klingberg’s stint with the team didn’t lead to desired playoff success. As a result, he found himself on the free agent market for the second consecutive year. While he settled for a one-year contract in 2022, Klingberg is anticipating a long-term deal this time around.
Although Klingberg’s defensive game has room for improvement, he remains highly regarded for his prowess on the powerplay. His offensive skills make him an attractive target for teams seeking an offensive weapon as the free agency period commences on July 1.
The past year has been a rollercoaster for Klingberg, who initially expected to secure a lucrative long-term deal in the previous offseason. Instead, he settled for a one-year “prove-it” contract with the Ducks. Regrettably, his performance in the 2022-23 season did not elevate his market value. However, if Klingberg can recapture his previous form as a dynamic puck-moving defenseman, the risk of signing him may prove worthwhile, especially for teams in need of offensive contributions.
As the offseason progresses, it will be intriguing to see which team is willing to invest in Klingberg’s potential, recognizing both his offensive strengths and defensive limitations.
