Timing Critical as Flames Have Morgan Frost’s Name Out There in Trade Talks

The Calgary Flames continue to field trade calls on center Morgan Frost, according to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta. As the rebuilding club keeps listening on offers heading into the second half of the summer, it’s unclear whether the Flames will wait to finalize a trade at the deadline or prioritize an immediate deal.

Frost, 27, is coming off a career year, posting 43 points (22 goals, 21 assists) across all 82 games last season, along with a near-57% faceoff win percentage and just 15:30 of nightly ice time. He’s entering the final season of his contract at a $4.375 million AAV and carries an eight-team no-trade list.

The Flames are dumping NHL players, having already dealt Rasmus Andersson to Vegas, MacKenzie Weegar to Utah, Blake Coleman to Minnesota, and Nazem Kadri to Colorado. GM Craig Conroy is stockpiling multiple first- and second-round picks as they go through a rebuild and Frost would earn them another one.

As a pending unrestricted free agent, he is the logical next piece to move while his value is at its highest. The question for Calgary becomes: do you wait and hope Frost puts up even better numbers than last season? Or, is it too risky that he takes a step back and his value drops? He can slot into a mid-six center role immediately for any team, but he may never exceed the 22 goals he scored last season.

Current Interest in Frost Is Real

Pagnotta reports that teams are interested. Meaning, if the Flames wanted to move Frost now, they could. However, this probably isn’t urgent. Frost might make for a better rental, and buyers appear content to let the summer play out rather than pay a premium now.

Nothing appears imminent.
