The NHL Makes a Ruling on Golden Knights Sanctions Appeal

The Vegas Golden Knights appealed the sanctions against them, and the NHL has already made a ruling that the team won’t like.

Both insiders Elliotte Friedman and Frank Seravalli are reporting that the Vegas Golden Knights officially appealed the NHL’s sanctions against them in New York on Tuesday morning. As is, the penalties remain and the NHL has not ruled back their decisions.

Seravalli notes, Vegas that the Golden Knights’ appeal of sanctions for violation of media access policy were heard this morning in-person. The penalties currently stand as originally assessed. He adds, “We’ll see if Commissioner Bettman decides to reduce upon consideration.”

Meanwhile, Friedman reported: “Vegas/NHL met at 10 am today As it stands, penalties remain as assessed: $100K fine to John Tortorella Second-round pick. There is possibility if Vegas is compliant with rules, there could be some addressing of this in the future…but it doesn’t sound like there’s room for draft penalty to be revoked…”

The argument for keeping the sanctions are that should the NHL go back on their decision, they would have no credibility if the idea is to ensure other teams don’t do what Vegas did. Not only that, but reports were that this was not the first time the Golden Knights had been talked to by the league.

What About the Bruce Cassidy Situation?

Friedman adds that nothing was discussed in relation to former head coach Bruce Cassidy. Some believe the NHL might step in and force the Golden Knights to grant permission for him to interview, while others report the NHL has no legal grounds to do so. “As for Bruce Cassidy, sources indicate that was not part of the conversation and his status is unchanged as of this morning Vegas is not inclined to give permission to Edmonton or LA. We will see about Toronto,” wrote Friedman.
